Annual Dinner & A Movie!

Save the Date for Our Annual Dinner & A Movie!

Join your fellow Dames on Tuesday, March 24, at Kimball Hall in Roswell for our annual Dinner & A Movie. Our wonderful Dame Cathy Conway and her team at Avalon Catering will be providing a buffet meal to go with this year’s film. In fact, we’ll be watching two movies this year:

CUD, a 2009 co-production by the University of Mississippi’s Media & Documentary Projects Center & the Southern Foodways Alliance, is a documentary film by Joe York that profiles Georgia cattleman Will Harris. The film was screened around the world, including at the Atlanta Film Festival, the Going Green Film Festival in LA and the Reel Earth Film Festival in New Zealand. It was also nominated for the Chipotle Food that Matters Prize.

Then we’ll see HOMEPLACE, a 2019 film that celebrates farmer and Dame Jenni Harris. Jenni is the fifth generation to farm the land at White Oak Pastures in Bluffton Georgia. For 147 years, the land has been worked by the Harris family. But this is no ordinary farm. See how she and her family have transformed the farm, which has cattle, chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits and an organic vegetable garden, into a truly sustainable business.

There will also be a Q&A moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Kim Severson following the films. This event is BYOB, so please bring your own wine to enjoy!

Tuesday, March 24
6 p.m.-9 p.m.
Kimball Hall
881 Mimosa Blvd.

October Chapter Event

The Global Culinary Initiative's October 1st Event will bring you to the kitchens of Kathmandu, in the extraordinary setting of Dame Marie-Laure Coste Dujols' Le Jardin Français. French wines included.

Our Culinary Guest, Hira Chettri, will provide us with a hands-on workshop to create Nepal's favorite comfort food, momos. While sharing her expertise in creating these little pockets of vegetarian and meat-filled goodness, she will also provide insight into the spice combinations and culinary traditions of the Nepali people. Her family's journey from Bhutan to Nepal to America have informed her cooking, her career, her experience as a metro-Atlanta restauranteur, and as a mom with her eldest daughter starting college at Oglethorpe University this year!

Our Extraordinary Host, Dame Marie-Laure, will provide us with the international ambiance and hospitality that is her trademark. Her company, Le Jardin Français, is an international floral, event, and garden design firm based in Atlanta, Georgia, with a boutique located in Westside Provisions District. Barbecue Nation: The History of Barbecue in America

bbqnation.jpg

Please join us, Monday, October 1st, 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm, for a tour of the Atlanta History Center’s Newest Exhibit, Barbecue Nation

The exhibition explores how barbecue has come to claim an enduring place at the American table, and how it connects us to cultures around the world, in addition to traditions, history, and the future.

The exhibition includes a wide array of artifacts, images, and oral histories from restaurants, festivals, community gatherings, and archives and museums from across the country.

Barbecue Nation includes historic photos and '50s and '60s advertising images (including an ad for the astonishing-in-retrospect Armour's Ribs in a Can), and features cookbooks, postcards, menus, place settings, and other artifacts from iconic barbecue joints.

Vintage grills demonstrate the evolution of backyard cooking from trench to brick pit to mobile cooker. Among them: a 1948 Char-Broil Wheelbarrow Picnic Cooker, a 1965 Weber kettle, and a Japanese kamado brought home by a U.S. serviceman in the 1970s (Big Green Egg cites “ancient cookers” from China and Japan in this style as a design inspiration). Also on view is President Dwight D. Eisenhower's GE PartioCart, a high-end, dual-fuel cooker trimmed in turquoise that he fired up at his retirement home in Palm Springs, California. A more contemporary eye-catcher is the 13-foot-long “Space Shuttle BBQ Pit” created by Houston-based Gator Pit of Texas.

Ticket also include food provided by Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q and (2) two drink tickets to the cash bar.

Dames Who Play in the Kitchen for a Cause!

This is a DAMES only experience curated by Dames for Dames. Join Co-Hosts Stacy Zeigler, Amy Crowell, and Judith Winfrey for Dames Who Play in the Kitchen on Sunday, May 6 at 5 pm. This event will be a Giving Kitchen Supper Club event.

The Giving Kitchen (GK), a nonprofit providing emergency assistance to restaurant workers through financial support and a network of community resources, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this May with a new signature event: the GK Supper Club. Before Atlanta Chef Ryan Hidinger was diagnosed with stage-four cancer, he and his wife Jen hosted Prelude to Staplehouse supper clubs in their home as a precursor to opening their dream restaurant, Staplehouse.. After his diagnosis, the purpose behind opening Staplehouse became bigger than they had imagined, and the Giving Kitchen was born. In what is nearly five years, because of Ryan's vision, GK has helped over 1,000 restaurant workers in crisis with over $1.6 million. GK wants to honor Ryan's vision for the Giving Kitchen for its fifth anniversary by taking our supporters back to the beginning with the GK Supper Club, inspired by Prelude to Staplehouse.

Come join LDEI Atlanta in celebrating Ryan, Giving Kitchen and the fellowship of Dames for our GK Supper Club at the home of Stacy Zeigler. Make your favorite pot luck dish, bring a Peach Dish Kit inspired by Prelude to Supper Club or feel free to let one of Ryan’s Prelude to Supper Club dishes (Check out their amazing menus and photos at Prelude to Staplehouse) be your inspiration.

Please consider bringing a DONATION for the Giving Kitchen that night or donate online
